Diwali Home Renovation Day 7: Diwali Decoration & Pooja Essentials Checklist

By Swati Rani
After dragging, adjusting and re-adjusting furniture, drapes and beddings, installing new lighting, painting and touching up the walls, arranging the kitchen and deep cleaning the entire house, we have now reached Day 7 of our Diwali Home Renovation Series.
And that is my favourite day because now the house is all cleaned up, organised and ready to welcome Diwali.
Now I need only to bring out all my diyas, flowers, torans, rangoli colours and other little decorative pieces that have been stored away for almost a year and make the entrance look welcoming, the living room look nice, the dining table look festive while not messing up the entire house to look like a decoration showroom.
So if you are also in the situation where Diwali is almost here and you want your house to look beautiful but don't have three days to decorate it, this final checklist is perfect for you.
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, November 8 and Lakshmi Puja will be observed that day; puja timings vary by location, so it's best to check a panchang for your city.
Day 7 Talks About Adding the Finishing Touches!
My biggest advice to you is to not start on a new renovation project on this day.
It's all about finishing off with the little things.
Furniture is all set. Soft furnishings are all in place. Lights are installed. Walls have been painted/refreshed. Kitchen is sorted. House is cleaned.
All I want to do now is take a basket of decorative pieces and ask myself: What does this corner need?
Sometimes, it's a diya. Sometimes, it's flowers. Sometimes, it's absolutely nothing.
The last point is very important because a festive home should not be cluttered with decorative pieces on every shelf, table and wall. Leaving some areas visually clean actually helps the decorated ones pop out more.
Diwali Decor For Each Part of the House!
1. Start With The Entrance
If I had only an hour to decorate the house, I'd start with the entrance.
After all, the front door is what your guests would see first and you can make it look festive without much work.
I'd hang a toran on the door and maybe add a small decorative piece on either side and lay a rangoli or ready made rangoli mat under it. If I happen to have real flowers available, fresh marigold strings are instantly a more festive entrance.

I also prefer to keep the decorations around the door slightly symmetrical as it makes even simple decorations look more intentional.
Make sure to clean the door and door handle before decorating because a beautiful toran on a dirty door is not the Diwali makeover we're going for.

Quick entrance idea: Clean door → toran → rangoli → diyas. That's it. No need to overdo it.
2. Make The Living Room Glow Without Cluttering It
The living room is the first place everyone will gather, so I need it to be warm and not too overloaded.
Since Day 3 already took care of the main lighting installation, I'll be using small decorative lights for accents.
I'll run a string of lights around a window, behind a console table, along a balcony door or a decorative mirror. If I have a plain wall, a few small lights can make a lovely festive backdrop.
Then I'll bring back the cushions and throws from Day 2 and arrange them nicely.
I'd also like to keep the colours consistent here. If my cushions are already in warm festive shades, I don't need five different colours of decoration to fight for attention.
My living-room formula: Warm lights + cushions + flowers + 2-3 decorative accents = festive enough.
And yes, I'll probably be rearranging the cushions about seven times before everyone arrives.
3. Give The Pooja Space Its Own Little Moment
Here, I think it's best to keep the decoration simple and traditional.
Start by cleaning the pooja unit, shelf or designated area and change any old or faded cloths as needed and arrange the idols respectfully.
Then I'll add a clean pooja thali, diya, flowers and other items that the family traditionally uses for Lakshmi Puja.
If you want to use a decorative backdrop, keep it simple. A string of flowers, a small toran or warm lights around the surrounding area can make the space feel special without distracting from the puja itself.

Many Indian households traditionally use flowers and leaves such as marigold, mango, Ashoka or banana leaves while preparing their homes and spaces for the Lakshmi Puja, though customs differ between families and regions.
My little tip: Keep all the pooja essentials in one tray or box before Diwali evening. Because somehow, this question is guaranteed to appear five minutes before the puja.
Amazon Decorations That Can Make Diwali Decorating Faster
It's here that I wholeheartedly embrace shortcuts.
Decorating is a big hobby of mine, but honestly, I don't want to spend half my day cutting paper, making complex DIY decorations or trying to craft the ideal rangoli while someone's walking around it.
These are types of items I would have on standby for a quick festive decorating session.
Set of 4 Handmade Quick Decor Floral Rangoli Mat | Reusable Festive Decor
A girl who loves to have an entrance that looks festive without taking an hour to make a rangoli from scratch can rejoice at this quick fix! Using the reusable floral mats you can add a pop of color and festivity to your entrance, pooja area or living room.
CraftVatika Rangoli Kolam Stencil Set of 12
While I love drawing rangolis, getting all the patterns just right can be challenging at times. A set of 12 stencils will help me create neater and more intricate designs in much less time, which means more festive fun and less tedious drawing on the floor!
12 Inch Portable Rangoli Stencils for Door Entrance
I know how easy it is for me to want a nice rangoli at my entrance but then realize that making one takes too long. That's why I need this portable stencil! It will let me make a beautiful design on my floor with minimal effort so that I can have more time to arrange my diyas and decorate the rest of my home for the occasion!
4. Turn the Dining Table Into a Festive Setup
The dining table doesn't need a giant centrepiece.
In fact, I would keep it practical because people actually need to eat there.
Start with the table runner or tablecloth from Day Add a small flower arrangement, a couple of decorative diyas or a simple festive centrepiece.
If you are hosting dinner, leave enough space for serving dishes.
A beautiful centrepiece that forces everyone to move it every time a bowl of pulao arrives is not exactly functional decoration.
Easy festive table setup: Runner + flowers + 2 diyas + clean dinnerware + one small centrepiece.
Done.

5. Give the Balcony Its Diwali Glow
The balcony is one of my favourite places to decorate because even a small balcony can look completely different at night.
Use the lighting from Day 3 as the foundation, then add diyas or LED decorative lights along the railing.
If you already have plants, don't cover everything with decoration. Instead, work around them.
A few warm lights intertwined around plants can look much more natural than filling every inch of the railing.
Small balcony?
Try:String lights + 4–6 diyas + plants + one small floor decoration.
That's enough to make the space feel festive.

6. The Staircase and Hallways Can Be Easy Wins
These are areas I usually forget until the last minute. If your home has a staircase, place small LED lights or decorative lights along the railing.
For hallways, use a few wall lights or small decorative accents rather than filling the entire passage. The trick is to create a visual flow through the house.
You want the decorations to guide the eye from the entrance → living room → dining area → balcony/pooja space.
You can use the rangoli mats to line your corridors or stairs, and make a basic corner of your house lively and beautiful!
Diwali Sale 2026: What To Buy For The Final Decoration?
If you have some shopping to do, this is also the stage when I would look for Diwali decoration deals, Diwali decor offers and festive discounts on what I need to complete my final setup.
The Great Indian Festival 2026 and Big Billion Days 2026 are on the way and these are worth keeping track of. Amazon has announced that Great Indian Festival will start on October 8, 2026, whereas the Big Billion Days on Flipkart will begin on October 9 for everyone and on October 8 for some lucky customers.
Rather than buying a lot of unnecessary stuff only because it is on a big festive sale, I would rather buy what I actually need to complete my Diwali setup.
So here are my preferences for Diwali shopping 2026:
- Decorative lights
- Toran
- Diyas and candle stands
- Rangoli kits, colors, etc.
- Pooja items
- Table decoration
- Festive cushion covers
- Decorative flowers
- Boxes to store my decorations in
- Miniature home decor items
I would also compare the prices, coupons, bank offers and discounts on similar products across different platforms to get the best deal.
This is where SearchMyDeals can help as a price comparison portal to find deals and compare coupons, prices, discounts and offers from different websites and marketplaces before you buy something online.
The goal is not to buy the most, but to buy what I actually need for my home to look festive without going broke in the process.
